How to Sell Bitcoin to a Skeptic

May 07, 2023

The primary topic of today's Decoder edition is BitcoinBitcoin. Since the beginning of The Verge in 2011, we have covered Bitcoin. Since then, I've heard a lot of loud, authoritative voices proclaim that it will shape the future of something. Everything. Maybe absolutely nothing. I'll be really honest here: I've never believed in Bitcoin. Over the past ten years, its value has skyrocketed, but there have been very few actual applications for this supposed revolutionary digital currency. However, that price keeps rising, and it seems as though the Bitcoin tale is about to turn.

Additionally, there doesn't appear to be much room for disagreement between those who believe Bitcoin will revolutionize the world and those who do not. For this episode, I spoke with two people. I first talked to an investor in bitcoin. A few days later, I had a conversation with a Bitcoin skeptic. I made an effort to assume the opposing position in each conversation, but without the typical pandemonium and shouting that tend to mark Bitcoin discussions. Nic Carter is the investor. He is a general partner at Castle Island Ventures, which finances start-ups that are expanding the payment accessibility of Bitcoin by building on top of its infrastructure. Ensuring that bitcoin can behave like money. Steve Hanke is a skeptic.

What is it, first of all?

Simply put, Bitcoin is intended to function as a kind of money similar to dollars or euros. It was said to be a platform for buying and selling goods and services. However, Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, therefore it is controlled by complicated math instead of governments, which manage regular currencies. Through the use of blockchain technology, security is included in the coins themselves, making them difficult to counterfeit or steal. Let's face it, the majority of individuals who purchase Bitcoin have no idea how the technology operates, but fortunately, you don't have to. Similar to how you don't need to fully comprehend the financial system to rely upon currency. People like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel are the main reasons for my faith in Bitcoin. Both are much more technologically savvy than I am.

However, it is a failure as a medium of exchange, so I'll get right to the bad

Bitcoin cannot be both a fantastic investment opportunity and a trading platform at the same time. If you believe that your Bitcoin will increase in value over the day, you would never spend it on anything since you would be giving up potential gains.

Basic example:

Day 1: $30,001 worth of bitcoin

60k for a car, or 2 bitcoin

Day 2: $40,000.1 in bitcoin

60k for a car, or 1.5 bitcoin

I would be a fool if I used my Bitcoin investment to pay for a car. Waiting a day would have allowed me to save a half-bitcoin ($20,000) in the example above.

So what is it if it isn't a currency? In actuality, a lot of investors view Bitcoin as an asset. They purchase it as they would share in the hopes that the price will rise and they can subsequently sell it for a profit. These guys have no intention of using their Bitcoin to make any purchases. I belong to the group. The fundamental conundrum of Bitcoin is this. To be interesting as an investment, it must be worthless as a form of money.

For people who are interested in making money, a stable asset is uninteresting. Because both Bitcoin and digital gold are rare and are used as an inflation hedge, I see them as being more similar. Since there is a limited supply, as long as demand increases, the coin value should increase. The reason why so many Bitcoin investors are so pushy is because it raises the value of their holdings, thus they want you to buy! You shouldn't succumb to the blatant bias that lies beneath everything.

Peter Schiff declares his readiness to trade his bank for bitcoin

Bitcoin skeptic and gold enthusiast The bank Euro Pacific is still up for sale, according to Peter Schiff. However, the Commissioner of Financial Institutions of Puerto Rico, also known as the Oficina del Comisionado de Instituciones Financieras (OCIF), has suspended the activities of his bank because of its "crass noncompliance with the minimum capital requirements." The regulator, according to Schiff, won't let him sell the bank even though he already has a buyer lined up. I am committed to working with the banking commissioner of Puerto Rico to resolve the capital issues with my bank for the benefit of all of the bank's customers, he emphasized.

Schiff has been tweeting often about the subject ever since the Puerto Rican regulator shut down his bank. He has argued that there is no evidence of criminal behavior at the bank and emphasized that if the Commissioner would just approve the transaction, customers may immediately take all of their money. Schiff clarified: "My bank was not thrown into receivership as a result of being insolvent. Not because it lacked capital, but because it was undercapitalized. With $2 million in capital, no loans or debt, and enough cash on hand to pay back all depositors in full, my bank is completely capitalized. $7 million in funding is required from the buyer according to the company's website, a variety of other cryptocurrencies are also accepted through Bitpay. Schiff continued to criticize Bitcoin despite accepting it as payment for his bank.

Store of Worth

Manish's Universe

Being a store of value and a means of transferring purchasing power across time and space is one of the main purposes of money. This role is carried out by every successful money. As shown in hyperinflationary nations like Venezuela, savings swiftly shift elsewhere when a monetary asset lacks credibility as a store of value.

Conclusion

A new form of currency called Bitcoin is gaining popularity. Based on its inherent characteristics, Bitcoin has a lot of potential as a future store of value even though it is not now a widely used store of value. Bitcoin is likely to defy our normal intuitions because monetary assets do not occur regularly, and this has caused (understandable) disagreement in the financial community. Of course, that is where the opportunity is. For patient, long-term investors willing to put in the effort to fully comprehend Bitcoin, we think that the risk/reward profile offered by this currency is very tempting. This essay should serve as a useful starting point
